DRIVING TEST11/01/2012
Figures show that nearly 300 people took their driving test for the tenth time in 2011 and only 88 of them passed. The traditional advice “if at first you don’t succeed try again” does not seem to ring true for some drivers. The pass rate falls the more times candidates sit their test. Just over a third of people taking their test for the sixth time were successful and for people who kept going it just got worse.

The Driving Standards Agency revealed that a 26-year-old woman had failed her theory test on 90 occasions. It is estimated that the unnamed woman spent nearly £2,800 on the exams. Details disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act showed that a man in the Midlands had failed the practical test 36 times.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety, said there were two probable reasons why the test appeared to become harder after several attempts. The first was that people were likely to be more nervous. The second was that the financial cost of learn... Read more

Better enforcement and education to cut road deaths

Plans to improve road safety education while taking tough action against the small minority of dangerous drivers were set out by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond today.

Careless driving will be made a fixed penalty offence to allow the police more effectively to tackle reckless driving that puts other road users in danger, while disqualified drivers face having to take a new test before regaining their licence.

There will also be more educational courses that can be offered in place of a fixed penalty and points in appropriate cases as well as a new post-test qualification for novice drivers, under plans set out in the new Strategic Framework for Road Safety.

IT’S one “L” of record – a Coventry motorist failed 24 driving tests before finally passing.

That makes the dogged driver the holder of a unique MOT – most often tested – in the whole city.

At the 25th attempt, and thousand of pounds lighter in fees, the persistent rookie was able to rip up the L-plates.

The only unanswered question now is: was it a man or a woman?

For while the number of attempts has been disclosed by the Driving Standards Agency, following a freedom of information act request from the Telegraph, the agency won’t name the record holder.

The driver started every test at the Bayton Road test centre, in Exhall, which mainly takes Coventry learners.

Another motorist, who took driving tests at a variety of different locations around the UK, eventually passed from Bayton Road in 26 attempts.

The Coventry driver is a long way from being the UK’s worst. A 39-year-ol... Read more
